WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon has released excerpts from an investigation that confirms that a Pakistani wearing the uniform of a local militia was responsible for the shooting death of Army Maj. Larry J. Bauguess in May 2007.
The incident happened on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border, following a meeting between U.S., Afghan and Pakistani soldiers meant to reduce tensions along the frontier.
Until now, Washington had kept quiet about a Pakistani role in Bauguess's death. It initially reported that he died of wounds sustained by "enemy small arms fire," without mentioning a Pakistani gunman.
On Monday the Pentagon released excerpts from its investigation. It said the Pakistani who shot the U.S. soldier was in the uniform of a militia that reports to the Pakistani Army.
