A look at recent major attacks in Afghanistan's capital:

2011

--Dec 6: A suicide bomber strikes Shiite worshippers gathered the Abul Fazl shrine in Kabul, killing at least 54 people. The bomber blows himself up in the midst of a crowd commemorating the Ashoura, a Shiite holy day.

--Oct. 29: A suicide bomber driving a van loaded with explosives hits an armored NATO bus, killing 12 Americans, one Canadian and four Afghans.

--Sept. 20: An insurgent with a bomb wrapped in his turban assassinates former President Burhanuddin Rabbani who was leading a government effort to broker peace with the Taliban. The explosion also kills four bodyguards.

--Sept. 13: Taliban insurgents fire rocket-propelled grenades at the U.S. Embassy, NATO headquarters and other buildings, killing seven Afghans in a coordinated daylight attack. No embassy or NATO staff members were hurt.

--Aug. 19: Taliban suicide bombers storm the British Council, the U.K.'s international cultural relations body, killing eight Afghans during an eight-hour firefight on the anniversary of the country's independence from Britain.

--June 29: Nine insurgents armed with explosive vests, rifles and rocket launchers storm the InterContinental Hotel in Kabul, killing at least 12 people and holding off NATO and Afghan forces for five hours.

--June 18: Insurgents wearing Afghan army uniforms storm a police station near the presidential palace and open fire on officers, killing nine.

--May 21: A suicide bomber wearing an Afghan army uniform slips inside the main military hospital in Kabul, killing six Afghan medical students.

--April 27: A veteran Afghan military pilot opens fire at Kabul airport, killing eight U.S. service members and an American civilian contractor.

--Jan. 28: A suicide bomber attacks inside Western-style supermarket, killing eight people.

2010

--Dec. 19: Two insurgents strapped with explosives ambush a bus carrying Afghan army officers to work, killing five soldiers and wounding nine.

--May 18: A Taliban suicide bomber attacks a NATO convoy, killing 18 people, including five American troops and a Canadian soldier.

--Feb. 26: Suicide attackers strike two residential hotels, killing 20 people, including seven Indian nationals.

--Jan. 18: A team of suicide bombers and gunmen target government buildings; 12 die, including seven attackers.

2009

--Oct. 28: Gunmen with automatic weapons and suicide vests storm a Kabul guest house. At least 11 people die, including five U.N. staff and three attackers. Two rockets target the luxury Serena Hotel and one strikes close to the presidential palace, with no casualties.

--Oct. 8: A suicide car bomber detonates his vehicle outside the Indian Embassy, killing 17 people, mostly Afghan civilians, and wounding at least 76.

--Sept. 17: A suicide car bomber kills six Italian soldiers and 10 Afghan civilians on one of Kabul's main roads.

--Aug. 15: A suicide car bomber strikes near the front gate of NATO's headquarters, killing at least seven Afghans and wounding nearly 100.

2008

--July 7: A suicide car bomb detonates his vehicle at the gates of the Indian Embassy, killing more than 60 people and wounding around 150.

--April 27: Militants attack a ceremony marking Afghanistan's victory over Soviet occupation in the 1980s, killing three and wounding eight people. Three gunmen are also killed.

--Jan. 15: Militants storm the Serena Hotel in a coordinated assault that kills seven.
